Campbellton’s waterfront amphitheatre is about to get a facelift.
Earlier this year, CAO Manon Cloutier said that money had been set aside by the previous city council to make repairs to the sides and roof of the amphitheatre, but time and a lack of affordable bids meant the upgrades were shelved, leaving no roof or side on the popular spot for more than 18 months. She said one submission was received.
Council recently chose to go with the bid from Campbellton’s Restigouche Property Maintenance to do the work on the roof and walls at the cost of just over $55,000 to install wood as the surround and roof of the structure.
The walls and roof of the amphitheatre, which were removed each autumn and put back up each spring, had previously been made of a heavy rubber/tarp-like material that vandals would damage almost every year by cutting. Combined with weather the surround was ultimately unfit for use in 2022 and the amphitheatre’s been uncovered and without walls ever since that summer.
In February, Cloutier told council that the lone bid received last year was close to double the amount council intended on spending so she was asked to re-work the tender, with RPM the lone company to bid.
It’s expected the work will be done by the time the amphitheatre plays host to weekly community concerts and summer get-togethers, including the weekly market on nearby Andrew Street.
